Ubermedia is the parent company of Kobrala, an underground art company created in 1998 by artist Andy Howl and his then girlfriend Alainna, while living in Savannah, Georgia. The couple taught themselves screen printing in their tiny one bedroom apartment above an insurance agency in downtown Savannah. They sold their shirts to small counter culture shops like Planet 3 in Savannah and Noir Leather in Detroit. Kobrala was originally launched via a cryptic series of posters stapled to telephone poles across downtown Savannah. The posters featured obscure esoteric slogans like Knowers dont talk. Talkers dont know. and Everyone has a snake inside... is yours a kobra? Andy provided the iconic art and Alainna handled the printing and business side of the team. It wasnt long before Kobrala hooked up with an online bookstore, Maledicta.com, in 1998 which helped launch the company onto the web with their own site that summer. The couples bold black and white art t-shirts were soon getting attention from magazines like Boston based Instant Magazine and Heads Magazine plus exposure in indie Devil in the Woods Magazine, Alternative Press, and the punk bible Maximum Rock N Roll. Kobrala relocated back to Michigan at the end of 1998 and the company soon expanded its catalogue to include new items. Long sleeve shirts with sleeve prints, skull caps, hand printed wall art pieces, and tribal masks imported from Indonesia. In 2002 the couple had a child and started putting more energy into other artistic areas, such as painting and tattooing. In-house printing shutdown in 2004, just before Andy and Alainna relocated to South Florida. Today Kobrala exisits under the umbrella of Ubermedia, which allows it to continue to exist, but separately from other artistic endeavors. Kobrala merchandise is still available today via a parternship with Cafepress.
