Owners Steve and Kay Rye started in 1970 by selling their handmade creations at festivals and state/craft fairs throughout the Midwest and South. In the early years Sole Survivor had shops in New Orleans, Florida, the Smokey Mountains and Cincinnati. While spending time in Texas, Steve learned the art of bootmaking. Steve and Kay then came to St. Louis where they opened the Central West End business that was known as Sole Survivor. Sole Survivor built a reputation for custom leatherwork including handmade sandals, leather belts and expert leather repair. The 90s brought the age of technology to the world in a way no one could have imagined. The Ryes son Jesse had a great interest in computers - especially the internet and Sole Survivor became one of the worlds very first online retailers. Their first online store - naotfootwear.com, aka leathersandals.com - launched in 1995. A few years later came the sister site, leatherbelts.com. Careful planning, continuing education and daily vigilance keeps Sole Survivor on the leading edge of online handmade leather goods. To keep up with the growth of the online stores, Sole Survivor moved to a larger facility. Today Sole Survivor is located in historic downtown Belleville, IL., a small community east of St. Louis. This location houses the retail store, offices, shipping operations and the production facility. In their newly remodeled store now known simply as The Leather Shop, Steve offers his handmade handbags, wallets, and custom leather belts. The Leather Shop (aka Sole Survivor) is also an authorized dealer in Naot brand footwear, boasting the Midwests largest selection of Naot comfort footwear.
