King Kilts is run by our Kiltmaker, Andrea Graham, and her husband Adam Elijah. She and Adam live in Garden City, Idaho in the Boise metropolitan area. King Kilts was born when her husband got the bright idea of trading his trousers for kilts and she wanted to show support by making him one. She researched kiltmaking online and studied how her husbands black watch kilt was sewn together, then duplicated it. The results were surprising, as Adam and all his kilt-loving friends were impressed. Due to the down turn in the economy, Andrea found herself out of work and her husband suggested she try selling kilts on eBay. From there, she expanded to selling custom-made kilts from her own website. From her husband, Andrea had learned two things about kilts: 1) They are VERY expensive and 2) the cost skyrockets for gentlemen of, let us say, larger girth. Doing some research online, she also found the reason WHY traditional tartan kilts cost so much: the price for a single yard of an official worsted wool tartan fabric can run around $35 or more. Try multiplying that one by the 8 yards found in most formal kilts, and you end up with the bulk of the expense of traditional kilts. She also found that most budget and casual kilts were either 1) poorly made 2)not sewn like a traditional kilt, 3) still hugely expensive or some combination. She decided to see if she could do something about that by creating a casual kilt that was built like a *real* kilt but with a price your average Joe Big Kilt would find a bit easier on the pocket book.
