In 1978, Lynn and Paul Allen founded Puddle Dock Leather Co. and began their 5 year experience as resident craftsmen in the Strawbery Banke museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Their business name came from a shallow docking area - Puddle Dock - in nearby Portsmouth harbor. During colonial times, merchants whose boats could land there (usually at high tide!) had convenient access to Portsmouth commerce. A leather craftsman was a merchant likely to be found near Puddle Dock. Lynn and Paul have been state-juried members of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen for 22 years. They continue to offer their leather wares at the League fair in Sunapee, New Hampshire as they have done for the past 2 decades. The Allens bring artistry to their leathercraft, creating beautiful designs that last and last. Each year at the Fair, visiting customers return to the Puddle Dock booth to say hello. Some years they buy a new handbag or belt, other years the customers say they just dont need a new one yet. The Allens describe their work: Painstaking craftsmanship and attention to detail are at the heart of our leather products. We use only the best materials, like solid brass fittings, premium quality full grain cowhide and special dyes for deep, rich colors.. Every feature of every item we sell is created by hand, one at a time. The only automation we use is a sewing machine. Were proud to make each item this way, because it means we never have to compromise on quality.
