Celebrating 30 Years of Quality, Fine Fibers and Original Design. On a frigid, twenty-five-below-zero day, the first shipment of English flannel sheets arrived at Grant and Pegge Dowse’s converted sugarhouse outside of Franconia, New Hampshire. Packing their Flexible Flyer sled to the max, they hauled the sheets to their tiny house, which served as office and shipping room. A month earlier, in December 1976, they had placed a one-inch ad in Yankee magazine and a two-inch ad in Country Journal soliciting requests for their new brochure with swatches. They called their company Garnet Hill, which was the name of the rise of land behind their home. The United States was still caught in the crunch of the energy crisis, and the fact that cozy flannel sheets could help lower heating bills was very appealing. Orders began rolling in immediately. From these humble beginnings grew the first full-size mail-order catalog dedicated entirely to sharing the concept that fine natural fiber merchandise could actually be a way of life. The mix soon included the best the world had to offer: traditional cotton percales, high-quality wool blankets, cashmere throws, as well as luxurious apparel from classic European companies like Hanro and Giesswein. Grant and Pegge’s legacy is still at the heart of how we do business at Garnet Hill. The Dowses believed that the success of their venture depended heavily upon the people that worked for the company. In response, they created a workplace culture that resembled that of an extended family and encouraged hard work in a relaxed atmosphere. Their ideas about lifestyle merchandising continue to influence and inspire our catalog and website today. Despite the astonishing growth in size and merchandise assortment, many things about us remain the same.
