For over 150 years, we have been a family business, based in the Garden County of Ireland, in the village of Rathdrum, Wicklow. Like many traditional general country merchants, the first Thomas Pierce, a farmer, began trading as a grocer and animal feeds merchant in 1848 in the mountain village of Tinahealy. Within 10 years, he extended, to include fuel, corn and wool trading. In 1943, Laurence Pierce, the eldest son of Thomas the third, purchased a grocery & bar premises, to-day known as the Woolpack Bar on The Square in Rathdrum, from where the business is now conducted. Five generations later, the business is still in the Pierce family. As Wicklow is a mountain county with poor land, the predominant source of income for the hill farmers was sheep and wool production. In earlier days, there were many local spinning and weaving mills, which left the tradition that is still carried on today.
